Trichologist Visits Hair Dzign Salon

We held our first consultation with Trichologist Michael Eaton on Thursday 14th July 2011 at Hair Dzign Salon and it was a very informative and successful day. All of the staff present learnt a great deal about La Biosthetique Methodes and we had the chance to try out a number of treatments.

Val had complained that her hair was lacking in something although she always takes a great deal of care with it, using quality shampoo, conditioner and serum. Michael quickly determined that her hair's lack of shine and brilliance was due to a build-up of chemicals on the hair so he prescribed an initial treatment with a clarifying shampoo, followed by Lipokerine A shampoo and then conditioning with Lotion Hydrotoxa.

All present, including Val herself, were astounded at the results. In a treatment period of just one hour, her hair was transformed from 'dull and lifeless' to 'bouncy and shining'.

On Ronnie, Michael used Pilvicure Shampoo Vital from the Methode Stabilisante followed by the Pilvicure Lotion to give her fine coloured hair more body and this, too was a great success. Ronnie was already very familiar with La Biosthetique products but she found that she was able to learn new information from the trichology expert.

Please note: Trichology is the study of diseases and disorders of the hair and scalp. The Trichological Society's course takes three years for someone with no formal medical qualifications and two years for a qualified medical doctor so a Trichologist really is an expert in all types of hair and scalp problems.

Hair Loss and Thinning Hair problems

HAIR LOSS and HAIR THINNING

An increase in hair loss and thinning hair can be caused by many factors:

Stress, illness, poor nutrition, hormonal fluctuations or genetic predisposition. Whatever the cause, a serious weakening of hair roots is the result. The active growth phase is cut short - hair is shed prematurely.

THE SOLUTION

With its unique METHODE REGENERANTE care concept, LA BIOSTHETIQUE provides everything your hair needs for improved growth, a positive energy boost and optimum support.

The growth impulse is heightened
The energy level of cells is increased
The hair's active growth phase is positively influenced
The hair roots' supply of nutrients is improved

HEALTHY SCALP, HEALTHY HAIR

The source of great looking hair is a healthy scalp and the key to a healthy scalp is perfect hair care and a professional assessment. Hair loss, greasy hair, itchy, flaking or tight scalps can all be signs of scalp problems so LA BIOSTHETIQUE has developed the Scalp Check Kit to instantly diagnose the pH balance, dandruff and sebum levels. The indicators are pressed against the scalp and compared to a results table to accurately prescribe the right hair care regime and scalp treatment to bring the scalp back to peak condition.

LA BIOSTHETIQUE has a huge range of problem-related natural hair and scalp care treatments that
can help.

Hair D'zign Salon is holding consultation sessions in the near future where you can come and meet a LA BIOSTHETIQUE trichologist to discuss your hair problems and be introduced to the various possible solutions. These will be FREE SESSIONS with absolutely no obligation. All of the consultations will be conducted in a relaxed manner and we have a discreet private area available for the consultations and discussions. Please enquire for more information or telephone 020 7286 9395.

Hair Loss Problems

Hair Loss & Thinning Tutorial

Hereditary:

Androgenetic thinning (Female pattern balding and Male pattern balding)

Alopecia:

Alopecia areata - patches of hair loss
Alopecia totalis - complete loss of scalp hair
Alopecia universalis - total loss of all body hair

Physical:

Traction alopecia (Friction alopecia).

Traction alopecia is a form of gradual hair loss caused mainly by a pulling force being applied to the hair. Can be caused by very tight ponytails, pigtails or braids. Traction alopecia is a substantial risk in hair weaves, which can be worn either to conceal hair loss, or purely for cosmetic purposes. The former involves creating a braid around the head below the existing hairline, to which an extension hairpiece, or wig, is attached. Since the hair of the braid is still growing, it requires frequent maintenance, which involves the hairpiece being removed, the natural hair braided again, and the hairpiece snugly and properly reattached. The tight braiding and snug hairpiece cause tension on the hair that is already at risk of falling out. Traction Alopecia is one of the most common causes of hair loss in African women. Although the aforementioned style is one of the culprits, hairstyles such as dreadlocks and single (extension) braids can also have the same effect.

Men and women who have suffered from Traction Alopecia have found that the hair loss occurs most at the hair line - primarily around the temples and the sides of their heads.

Hats, helmets, baseball caps and other hair accessories can also cause hair loss if they are worn most of the time and are too tight. In this case the condition is usually referred to as Friction Alopecia. The hair loss is usually quite localised in these cases to where the hat etc rubs against the scalp.

Weathering (trichorrhexis nodosa):

Trichorrhexis nodosa can be a genetic weakness within the hair shaft or weakness and breakage due to weathering i.e. over use of heat during the drying process or manual trauma due to tension on the hair from tight ponytail clasps, rollers (particularly velcro) or smoothing irons. Ultra violet light, central heating and the wind can all exacerbate this further and the condition will become progressive without the correct treatment.

Other Disorders:

Late Onset Thinning (age related)
Diffuse thinning
Telogen Effluvium
Pseudopelade

Scalp Disorders:

Genetic:
Seborrgoeic dermatitis
Seborrhoeic eczema
Pityrisias simplex (dandruff)
Pityriasis amiantecea
Psoriasis
Acne necrotics milaris

Infection:

Folliculitis
Folliculitis decalvans
Mycotic Infection

Other Disorders:
Pruritis
Seborrheoea
Seborrheoeic cyst

By all means come and see us at Hair D'zign Salon for advice, because in many cases there are some obvious and straightforward solutions that we can suggest. Alternatively, and probably better as a first step, is to go and see your medical general practitioner. Some cases of hair thinning and hair loss are caused by a medical problem, some are genetic and some are caused by lifestyle and practical factors as explained above. For the non-medical problems we can offer various natural treatments, certain kinds of hairpiece and various styles of wigs. Suffice it to say that there are a lot of possible solutions available.

Learning about Wigs

Introduction

Wigs are relatively expensive and are usually sold on a nonrefundable basis so you need expert guidance to be sure you select the correct type and style of wig. It also makes sense to learn everything you can about wigs, including colour choices, styles, and sizing before making a purchase.

Colour

Wigs are available in every natural hair colour (and a good many non-natural colours), even with highlights for a more stylish and natural appearance. Many people want to match the wig to their natural colour. If you are considering a colour substantially different from your natural hair colour, it is best to consult with a professional stylist to be sure it will coordinate with your skin colour.

Natural vs Synthetic Hair

Early synthetic wigs were generally poorly made and were easy to spot and could look very unnatural, but today they are actually an affordable and virtually indistinguishable alternative to natural hair. They are easier to care for but do not have as much flexibility as natural hair, which can still be dyed, permed, and restyled to match personal tastes. Both types of wigs require specialized shampoos and products to prevent excessive damage and prolong their life. Blended wigs are available that combine natural and synthetic hair to take advantage of the benefits of both materials, offering the styling options of natural hair with the greater durability and affordability of synthetic wigs. For more information go here: Wig Data

Bespoke Wigs

Wig manufacturers can also hand-make a customized wig from a client's own hair. Many chemotherapy patients consider this option prior to the onset of hair loss, though these are the most expensive types of wigs. Additional strands will need to be worked into the wig for fullness, and prospective buyers should consult individual manufacturers about wigs and
their customization options. Of course it is also possible to have an individual wig made with purchased hair.

Style

Wigs come in as many styles as you can find in any salon. When choosing a style, consider your face shape, the desired maintenance, and whether or not this is a style you would
want to wear continuously. When in doubt, it is best to start with a simple style; wigs can be professionally restyled and even cut if you wish to change the look. In fact, most wigs come with excess hair and it is recommended that they be taken to a stylist to be shaped and customized to your individual features. Some wig suppliers will offer a complete cutting, styling and maintenance service and it is recommended that you find such a salon locally if at all possible.

Size

Choosing the correct wig size is important for a natural appearance. Most adult heads are 21-23 inches in circumference and the majority of ready-made wigs will fit the average sized head. When measuring for your wig size, include around the head, front-to-back, and ear-to-ear measurements that correspond to your natural hairline. If you are buying online or by mailorder you should submit your measurements to the seller to ensure you receive a wig that will fit. It is much preferred to visit the wig supplier for a fitting before committing to a purchase as most suppliers will not give a refund.

Cost

Good-quality wigs cost several hundred pounds, while bespoke wigs may cost several thousand pounds. Longer, more elaborately styled wigs are more expensive, while human hair
wigs are also priced much higher than synthetic alternatives. There are also several grades of human hair. The Asian supplies are generally slightly coarser in texture (but can still be of quite high quality) whilst 100% Virgin European hair is the highest quality and finer textured. Virgin hair is unprocessed and supplied in its natural colour. Remember that human hair wigs can be restyled so it is possible to select a ready-made wig and have it re-styled and coloured to your requirements.  If you have hair loss that is medically related, you may be able to claim a contribution from the NHS. Also insurance companies may reimburse the costs, but be certain to investigate their policies concerning wigs before your purchase.

Wig Care and Maintenance

Wigs must be cared for properly to maintain a stylish and natural appearance. Because the hair in wigs - whether it is synthetic or artificial - has sometimes been heavily processed,
specialized shampoos and conditioners are recommended. Other hair products such as sprays and gels should also be wig-friendly formulas. Most wigs should be cleaned every 7
to 14 days, and when they are not worn they should be stored on a mannequin or wig stand to maintain the proper shape. Avoid using heating tools ( hot hair dryers, hot curlers, etc.) on wigs that may damage the strands or the cap. Hair dryers should be used on a cool setting.

Whether you wish to learn about wigs because of a medical condition or you are just investigating different styles, it is wise to learn about colour, style, and composition options before making such a significant purchase. With the wide variety of wigs available, anyone can find the perfect hairpiece to suit their personality with just a little background information.

n-fruizon Body Therapy Natural Products arrive at Apple Hair

Readers will know that Apple Hair is very keen to find new sources of all-natural hair and skin-care products and we have recently been looking closely at n-fruizon Body Therapy products and checking reviews and comments from existing users. This has led us to start stocking a few of the n-fruizon products at substantial introductory discounts of at least 30% off recommended retail prices. The products are comprised of almost 100% natural ingredients and based on Natural Cranberry Juice with various blends of Essential Oils. Our initial impressions of the products, now that we have them on test, are very positive indeed.

Mineral Indulgence Update

Well, I have good news and bad news about Mineral Indulgence. The first bit of good news is that we now have a good supply of eight of the most popular hair care products from this manufacturer. See our home page and click on Mineral Indulgence for full details; all of the products listed are available now from the website and from our West London salon.

The bad news is also in two parts. Firstly it seems there is little chance of us now being able to stock the Mineral Indulgence Natural Finish Foundation Powders or the Lip Glazes. Although we placed an order with our US supplier, it seems that she has taken the money and run!

Which leads me on to the second part of the bad news. The supplier we have been dealing with is one Stephanie Brown and it would appear that she is a fraudster. She has masqueraded as the company itself although it turns out now that she is just an individual buying products and selling them on. It would appear that the products are fine (those that we have received), certainly from the comments that we have received back from users. Ms Brown eventually supplied the hair care products but not the make-up products and my enquiries now are being ignored.

And to finish I have some more potential good news. Applehair is aware that hair care products designed for women of colour are hard to find in the UK so we are making strenuous efforts to fill this gap in the UK market both by sourcing further existing products and by embarking on a program of designing and manufacturing our own range. Mineral Indulgence may well have done us all a favour in the end if it leads to UK manufactured products finally being available easily and efficiently here and throughout Europe. Watch this space!

Ingredients to avoid

When I started to research ingredients that were best avoided because of problems that they can cause, I quickly discovered that there are a whole host of things that fall into this category. Therefore it seems impossible to draw up a reasonably comprehensive list so I have listed only a few of the worst ones below (in my opinion). Products that are labelled 'natural' or even 'organic' can also contain undesirable ingredients so care is always needed. Another problem is that many, probably the majority, of ingredients to be found in shampoos, conditioners, and skin care products have never actually been tested for safety........

Products available on Apple Hair have been vetted, as much as reasonably possible, to exclude those that contain 'nasties' ...... I have done my best!

These are some ingredients that we recommend are definitely avoided:

Sodium Laureth (Lauryl) Sulphate - a foaming agent (surfactant) and detergent - has been shown to produce skin and eye irritations. It is used in laboratory testing to produce skin irritation so that healing agents may be tested to see how effective they are!

Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Xylene Sulfonate, TEA Lauryl Sulfate are somewhat undesirable but are OK in products that are only in contact with skin or hair for a short time and are then rinsed-off. A few Apple Hair products fall into this category but we are happy still to recommend and offer them.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine. This is also associated with skin irritation problems and is best avoided.

Synthetic perfumes and fragrances. Synthetic perfumes can be pleasing aromas but they are not the healing aromas of the past. That there can be allergic reactions to toxins and chemicals used in synthetic perfumes has only recently become apparent. Many people today are once again preferring to use natural perfumes instead of synthetic fragrances.

The following are ingredients that seem to be suspect but there is conflicting evidence so I am proposing to do more investigation on these; for now I just list them as 'undesirable'

Triethanolamine, Lecithin, Propylene glycol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Trisodium HEDTA, Sodium Stearate, PEG-6, Sodium PCA, Parabens, Phthalates, PABA sunscreens, Petrochemicals in general.

I am continuing my researches and will update this page as I discover more information.

Hair and Beauty Care for Women of Colour

To truly get the best out of your hair and have it looking as fabulous as possible, it is very important to tailor your hair care regime to your specific hair type, because what works really well for your friends' hair may be completely wrong for your own.

Catering specifically for your own hair type is particularly important for women of colour, as afro hair has many features that mean it cannot and should not be treated in the same way as other hair types. Often, each strand of afro hair tends to grow in a tight corkscrew fashion, meaning that if not cared for correctly, the hair can look frizzy or feel uncontrollable. With the correct styling and products, however, this does not have to be the case.

Generally speaking, curly hair is always drier than naturally straight hair, meaning that afro hair is often extremely dry. Therefore no matter what your particular hair style is it is always important to deep condition your hair every time you wash it. Choose conditioners that are rich in natural proteins to keep your hair healthy and invest in a nourishing leave-in conditioner that will help your hair stay hydrated and shiny throughout the day. It is important to avoid towel drying or blow drying afro hair as this will only cause frizz, so instead let your hair air dry naturally and if this is not possible, blow dry on a low heat using a diffuser. Additionally you should always refrain from brushing afro hair (this again causes frizz), so instead use a wide toothed comb to detangle and remove knots. Some people swear by the use of a special brush, such as the Patrick Cameron Postiche Brush.

Long, straight locks have become very popular in recent years and women of colour are increasingly choosing to wear their hair straight. To avoid spending hours every day straightening their hair with a straightening iron (which is very damaging indeed), many women have their hair chemically relaxed. There are many different chemical relaxers available, so to make sure you get the one that is right for you it is vital that you do some research and consult your hairdresser. For example, there are now more natural hair relaxants available, which can be much less damaging to the hair.

As afro hair tends to grow very slowly many women of colour also choose to wear hair extensions. There are many different types of hair extensions available, for example human hair or synthetic hair. It is also possible to have them attached in different ways, including having them glued, clipped or braided into your own hair. To find what is right for you it is again important to consult your stylist, though remember that gluing-in extensions is generally more damaging to your natural hair. Then there are wigs to be explored and here there is a huge variety of types and qualities to consider; it is very important, if you are going to consider wigs, to spend some time having a consultation with a qualified wig maker or wig stylist. An initial consultation is often free and will give you a great deal of information about what is available.

Just like your hair, it is also important to choose the correct skin care and beauty products to ensure that your skin looks and feels its best. Black skin has a tendency to be oily, which means it is important to use a good cleanser or foaming face wash specifically designed for oily skin. Always use a toner after cleansing to close pores and then apply moisturiser. For oily skin it is important to use oil free moisturisers, as these will not clog up pores or make your face feel greasy. Similarly for those women who like wearing makeup it is also a good idea to find oil free, non-comedogenic makeup, which is much kinder to oily spot-prone skin than other cosmetics. Mineral based cosmetics are also very good, as they are lighter on the skin and less likely to feel cakey. All Mineral Indulgence cosmetics are oil-free, non-comedogenic and, of course, mineral based.

Of course, once you have beautiful hair and perfect makeup, it is important to finish off the look and make yourself feel even more fabulous with some seriously sexy lingerie. To really complete your glamour goddess feel, you cannot do better than some lovely undies from ballet lingerie.

Introduction of Mineral Indulgence Products to Apple Hair UK

This is an exciting time for us here at Apple Hair. We have been negotiating with Mineral Indulgence for quite some time with a view to introducing the very best range of Hair and Skin Care products for Women of Colour, to the UK. Up until now, those wishing to obtain these fantastic products have had to order them directly from the United States, and have had to pay the shipping and possible customs duties. Now Apple Hair UK is starting to stock some of these products and we will be gradually increasing the available products over the next few months.

I would say, of course, that these are fantastic products and the best available for women of colour. But you don't need to take my word for it; search for Mineral Indulgence on the Web and you will uncover a great deal of positive comment about this organisation and its product range.

Whilst we will be starting out with a relatively small number of products, we will be listening to what you say! So, if you want us to stock particular products, let us know and we will do our best to oblige!

Oh, and by the way, don't be put off if you are not actually in the UK. We ship worldwide and for Mineral Indulgence products we can supply anywhere with the exception of the United States and Canada (for sales within these countries please visit Mineral Indulgence )

Things to learn about Web Publicity

A few days ago I had a call from someone who said they were going to offer me a fantastic deal that would enable Apple Hair to obtain a huge amount of traffic and hence lots of new orders. Lots of name dropping took place and I have to say that I was impressed with what I was being told. The firm involved is called Directory Technologies Ltd and is also known as Edirectory and they trade as ShoppingBank.com. More name-dropping ensued and I was told that they also run GMTV's Shopping Channel and are associated with The Independent Newspaper. I asked lots of questions and was given what seemed to be convincing answers. The salient point was that I had been thinking a lot lately about how I could publicise Apple Hair effectively and so this approach came along at the right time (from Directory Technology's point of view).

Anyway I was told that ShoppingBank.com had a 'hole' in its retailer bank and that they had identified Apple Hair as one of three possible retailers that would 'fit the bill' as far as new applicants were concerned. So I asked for a quote and was given a figure to list all 500 products that Apple Hair currently markets. I slept on that and received a call from ShoppingBank the very next day to see what I had decided. My decision was 'no thanks, I can't afford it at present and anyway I am not ready with the compliment of products that I eventually want to be marketing' but Shoppingbank were not in the least daunted and their rep proceeded to offer me a very heavily discounted deal to list just 50 products. To my everlasting dismay I have to admit that I was seduced and agreed to sign up. I did so, perused the offered Terms & Conditions and paid my (heavily discounted) fee. The next development left me rather gobsmacked (I don't often use that word but I can't think of another that describes how I felt). I received an email from ShoppingBank.com presenting me with a new set of Terms and Conditions together with a very complicated set of Data Specifications (neither of which I had seen before). It also became clear that the main piece of information that had decided me to sign-up was completely untrue. I was told, many times, during the sales pitch that the process of uploading my product data to ShoppingBank.com would be extremely easy; all I would have to do was provide them with a list of products and they would 'lift' the data and pictures from my website without further work being needed from me.

The reality was very different indeed. It transpired that I was expected to do all the work myself, taking the data and pictures from each product individually and uploading it to the ShoppingBank.com system. I had a go but it took me nearly all day to complete 10 products. Then I was curtly told that all 10 needed extra data by way of keywords for search engines and something else called 'meta data' (don't ask!)

So, I have given up on this directory service and asked for a full refund. I have lost a lot of valuable time but I have learnt something. Some of it I already knew but I didn't take my own advice. 'If something seems too good to be true, it probably is'. C'est la vie!

Free Sample of Amargan Hair Therapy Oil

For a limited period I am making available a free sample of Amargan Hair Therapy Oil to all customers placing an order for £20 or more (excluding carriage charges). I am doing this as a way of encouraging customers to try this revolutionary product (and I really do believe that it is revolutionary). There is no risk and no cost to you; try it, I believe that you will like it and eventually order more. One of the amazing advantages with this product is that you need to use so little, even 10 ml will last you a long time. Not so good for my sales, but at least I will have got you to try it!

Apple Hair New Products

Last month I said that Apple Hair would be introducing new product ranges some of which would be 'hard to find' products and others that would be exclusive to Apple Hair and not available anywhere else. Also I said that I was hoping to offer each month at least one product at a very special discounted price, available for one month only.

Well, I would like claim that I have been able to make some progress on both of these initiatives. I have started to introduce products from Amargan, Green People and Moroccanoil and there will be products from Apolina coming very soon. The Moroccanoil Taster Deal is offered at a very special price indeed, £89.99 whereas it's recommended retail price is over £113.

More products from the above new suppliers will be introduced shortly and I am also talking to several other manufacturers about the introduction of their products.

If you can think of products that you would like Apple Hair to stock or indeed if there are any hair or beauty products that you wish to purchase but cannot, do let me know and I will see what I can do!

Apple Hair is under New Management

From early April 2010 Apple Hair is under new management. My name is Don Fowdrey and I am hoping to take this business on an exciting journey. Up until now Apple Hair has been offering a varied range of hair and beauty products all of which I would class as 'standard' products that are available to buy in the High Street and on very many websites too. This is fine and most of these products will continue to be available here and, as time progresses, very many more products will appear too.

There are two big changes that I want to introduce to Apple Hair UK as follows:

1. I am actively seeking new and exciting products that are not available 'everywhere' and there will be a few that are not available anywhere else, in other words they will be products exclusive to Apple Hair.

2. Each month I will introduce at least one major product at a very special price, but just for a month. This way I hope that clients will appreciate the fantastic savings that I will be offering but will also appreciate that such offers can never be 'open-ended' - ie if you want to buy at the Special Offer Price, you will need to get in quickly.
